Every year on December 6th, the birthday of former Nintendo president Satoru Iwata (who died in 2015), The Binding Of Isaac: Rebirth pays tribute to him and the Nintendo games which inspired Isaac in a special daily challenge run. We get to play as a wee Iwata, clad in his smart suit and clutching the ‘Gamekid’ item, while loot pools are slanted towards many of the items Isaac borrows from Mario and Zelda and whatnot. It’s nice. And then Iwata slaps a fetus on his face, starts wearing a sacrificial goat’s scalp, and… look, it’s still Isaac, okay.
I took Iwata on this year’s run yesterday. While he starts out cute, the roguelikelike dungeon-crawling shmup is still a trip through a murdered child’s dying hallucinations of wee, poo, skeletons, boogers, dead babies, and general grossery. Oh it’s nice to feed us items like the Red Candle and stepladder from Zelda or Mario’s mushrooms and tanooki tail, but sooner or later it will get weird.
By the intended end of the daily challenge, my Iwata looked like this:
That’s him with a fetus on the side of his head (Stem Cells, innit), a goat’s bloody scalp for a hat, a monocole, a fly buzzing around him, a holy crown, a headless baby trailing blood, a sack of pennies following him, a ghostly swirl for a body, and some combination of items giving him multiple mouths or eyes or… I don’t know what’s up with his face.
But! Salvation! With a little trickery, I managed to extend the run another floor and end up with an Iwata that’s actually quite nice. Nicer, anyway.
I ended up placing 102nd of 6069 players, which isn’t quite claiming glory for the big man but could’ve been a worse tribute from me.
Though Isaac was supposed to be properly proper finished for real this time following the launch of its final character in May, another expansion is now coming. Along with a load of “content that will make you shit your butts”, the Repentance expansion will roll in the mighty impressive mod Antibirth.
Challenges are unique runs that typically start the player off with one or more specific items or modifies game mechanics to make the game more difficult. Completing challenges unlocks new content for the game.

'Scrambling around his room to find a hiding place, he noticed a trapdoor to the basement, hidden under his rug. Without hesitation, he flung open the hatch just as his mother burst through his door and threw himself down into the unknown depths below.'

The Binding of Isaac is a hybrid Roguelike/Zelda-like Top-Down Shooter made by Edmund McMillen and Florian Himsl, released in September 2011.
The story follows Isaac, a young boy who finds himself in possibly the worst situation imaginable. After his fanatical Christian mother begins hearing the voice of God, she removes all of his worldly possessions and strips him naked, confines him to his bedroom, and unhesitatingly accepts a commission to kill him in sacrifice to prove her devotion. Isaac discovers her intentions and manages to escape into the basement, where, still naked, he goes on the run as he fights off nightmares both physical and mental (using his own tears, no less), discovers memories of his own past, and ultimately confronts Mom in an effort to survive.
A Video Game Remake, The Binding of Isaac: Rebirth, which overhauls almost every aspect of the game, has since been released on PC, Vita and PS4 on November 4, 2014. Skyrim mods on special edition. It has a rather creepy trailer (and an even creepier one here). Rebirth boasts a new engine, a larger development team, even more items, better synergies between said items, and more new content. Ports for the Wii U, New 3DS, and Xbox One consoles have since been released in 2015, and a Nintendo Switch port of the full game (including DLC) came with the console's launch in North America, while Afterbirth+ for Xbox One and Playstation 4 also came in Spring 2017.

The game also has a Spin-Offcurrently in development, titled The Legend of Bum-bo. The basic premise of the game is said to be a randomly generated RPG-like with a focus on puzzles.
Due to the surprising popularity of the game and the already large amount of content, multiple expansions have been released for both the original game and the remake:
On June 27, a Kickstarter page for The Binding of Isaac: Four Souls, a card game published by Studio71, was launched.
As well as all this, Isaac has also appeared as a playable character in games such as Blade Strangers and Crystal Crisis.
Tropes found throughout the series include:

Today I died. I was killed by this page on some wiki. (ugly)
I leave all that I own to my pet cat Guppy. (Pretty cool stuff!)
